Dr Michael Koa-Wing

Private Cardiologist

I am a Consultant Cardiologist with over 25 years of experience and a specialist focus on heart rhythm disorders. I see patients with a wide range of cardiovascular conditions, most commonly chest pain, breathlessness, palpitations, an irregular pulse, dizzy spells, blackouts and unexplained loss of consciousness. Whatever brings you to see me, my aim is the same: to listen carefully, understand your situation fully, and leave you with a clear explanation of your condition and a structured plan you feel confident about. I believe that good cardiology is not just about the right diagnosis; it is about making sure you understand it too.

While I am fully trained in all aspects of general cardiology, the majority of my career has been dedicated to the investigation and treatment of arrhythmias (abnormal heart rhythms), stroke prevention and implantable cardiac devices. I perform catheter ablation for conditions including SVT, atrial flutter, atrial fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia; procedures that treat the source of the problem rather than simply managing symptoms. I also implant a full range of cardiac devices: loop recorders,  pacemakers, defibrillators, cardiac resynchronisation devices for heart failure, and left atrial appendage occlusion devices to reduce stroke risk in selected patients.

My medical training began at Guy's, King's and St. Thomas' Medical School, where I graduated with distinctions, followed by postgraduate cardiology training at St. Mary's and Hammersmith Hospitals at Imperial College. I also undertook a visiting fellowship at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston; a Harvard Medical School-affiliated centre and one of the world's leading institutions for cardiac electrophysiology.

My PhD, awarded by Imperial College London, was in cardiac electrophysiology, and the research I conducted during that time led to the development of Ripple Mapping; a three-dimensional technique for guiding complex ablation procedures that is now used in centres around the world.

I currently hold senior roles as Clinical Director and Lead Heart Rhythm Consultant at West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, and work as part of the internationally renowned Arrhythmia Team at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, Hammersmith Hospital, where I continue to contribute to research aimed at improving outcomes for patients with heart rhythm conditions. I am also an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at Imperial College London, affiliated with the National Heart and Lung Institute, and a founder member of Leaders in Heart Rhythm Care — a group of highly specialised electrophysiologists delivering comprehensive, cutting-edge treatment through HCA Healthcare.
